Let's Get Physical

Eat More FruitEat More Fruit

...Let me hear your body talk...

I heard something recently, that due to the worries of our society being turned upside down, the job losses, the evaporation of savings, the foreclosures, the government take-overs and all the rest, people are stressing more and scrambling to find security and comfort by taking better care of themselves.

Depression, anxiety, chronic illness, and communicable diseases are skyrocketing as we descend into the Brave New World. Everyone must start now to make up for the loss of quality medical care that we know is coming when the government imposes rationed health care. This will be particularly bad for the most vulnerable of our society -- children and the elderly.

Here's what hubby and I have been doing for the last several years or so, but now we're being even more diligent about it. We're being very careful about our diet [eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, cutting back on desserts, eliminating most deep fried foods and red meat, and drinking plenty of water.] We exercise more [gym workouts everyday] and try to get more sleep. It's impossible to stop a genetic based disease from manifesting, but taking good care of yourself will help you fight it and prevent the everyday germs and the serious influenzas that are always lurking ready to attack you.

We've recently cut out excessive caffeine [very hard for me, since I'm addicted to coffee]. We don't smoke or drink [interferes with our heart medications] and we really try hard not to let the stress get to us. If that means spending another half hour on the treadmill to zone out, so be it. But it seems to be working, at least a little, even if it seems like life has become a bit more routine than we like.

What are you doing for yourself? Are you eating more fruits and vegetables like our girl above suggests? Do you eat oatmeal every day? Are you cutting down on adult beverages? sugar? fats? nicotine? Do you take the stairs instead of the elevator? Wear your seatbelt?

Try the No-Beef Challenge. It's difficult to do if you're a red meat eater and live with other meat eaters -- but try to do the best you can for one month. It's a great and painless way to lower your cholesterol. All you have to do is not eat beef for 30 days. If you have a partner willing to support you in this exercise, it's even easier. Substitute beef with fish, poultry, or tofu. Check out the Food Pyramid for more tips. Get easy to fix but healthy recipes here. Cook together -- it's fun!

Let us know the one thing you're doing for yourself to remain as healthy as possible. Start today if you've been putting it off, so you'll be strong and able to take whatever life dishes out!

Good luck and good health!

Good for you! We now eat homegrown fruit and veg. We don't smoke, drink very little alcohol, walk 4 dogs, swim and relax more. By leaving the UK we are now healthier and happier.

Glynis!! That sounds heavenly!! I really love the idea you are growing your own food. You can't get any more organic than that! I also love LOVE the idea about relaxing more, too. We're going to keep trying -- but like hubby says, "one day at a time!" so I don't get too anxious about not meeting the goals I expect or want. It helps a lot! Thanks for your thoughts today! :D

Great post! I think more people need to pay better attention to what goes in their bodies. My husband and I eat very little red meat, usually only if it's served to us. I cant remember the last time I cooked with it. A few years ago I had to go on a special diet where I couldn;t have ANY sugars in order to control a chronic intestinal thing that was acting up. We both did the diet and I can't tell you how light and healthy we felt!

The rule: shop the outside of the supermarket. Go up the produce aisle, across the meat and down the dairy. Skip all the boxed, processed and sugary stuff in the middle. It's amazing how great you will feel!!

Exercise is key, that helps you to remember to watch what you ingest! Exercise like anything else can become an addiction, a healthy one! Good for you!

I hear you! The world is a scary place these days. I'm sure generations before have said the same thing , but...!

BTW I love the pic. Eat more fruit! That is my favorite part of summer- all the fruit!

Kate!! That's excellent advice -- just go around the perimeter of the store for the fresh things!! The boxed stuff is just like eating a box of chemicals. Yuck!! I have to watch my sodium and if you read the labels on any of the processed foods -- OMG!! they are ALL loaded with sodium!! How to puff up and look like the Michelin Man in one easy lesson -- eat processed foods! It's horrifying! Thanks for your post & for contributing today!! :D

Hi P!! Thanks for your reminder about exercise!! It is addictive -- but it does work!! It's exactly as you said, when you care for your body through exercise, you're more likely to be careful of what you put into it. Like don't sweat off a pound, tone up those muscles and then sit down to a pepperoni pizza with extra cheese and a huge bowl of ice cream for dessert! LOL Turns my stomach to just think of that now!! Thanks for adding your thoughts today! :D

Lola!! I love that picture, too, she is so cute! :D [I found it at All Posters.] And yes, fruit is the best part of summer!! I've been addicted lately to cherries -- the perfect snack! My other favorite is nectarines, and I've put quite a few of those away, too. LOL

But seriously, this is a scary time in our lives and I think we all need to take as much responsibility in all aspects of our lives as we can. And you're right, earlier generations have said the same and they've come through OK. But it's just not the same anymore. Thank God for all the good things that have come about, but shame on us for the bad things. Our world has changed so much, I think the one thing each of us can do is take better care of ourselves. And eating fruit [favorites only!! LOL] should be the first thing we all do. Besides, it tastes great! :D

Thank you so much for dropping by and adding your thoughts today! I appreciate it so much! :D

I just had to add this thought. I just got back from the farm stand near my house and when I handed the high school girl two avocados to ring up she asked me what they were.

So sad that youngsters eat everything out of packages.

Kate!! That's awful!! Poor kid. What did she say when you told her? If she even ate them, maybe she knew them only as mooshed up spicy green stuff on tacos?

I think that produce stand owner is going to have to educate that kid pronto or get a smarter kid to work the register. You'd think with jobs being so scarce she'd at least make an effort to know the products! Too bad. I hope she improves in a big way by your next visit! That would be progress and good for everybody involved. Keep us posted if she waits on you again! Thanks for adding this.

SF, like you (again) we LOVE cherries. Another favorite is clementines..small, easy to peel and sweet like candy! A super mid-afternoon pick-me-up! Oh, fruit...another favorite is the very small thin rind watermelons that are seedless. Just delicious!

SG!!! I love clementines!! I used to save the little boxes, too, they were so cute and reminded me of the sunny goodness they contained.

Today I picked up a 4 lb container of fresh strawberries -- so we'll be munching on those for the weekend! I can't wait until our local strawberries are ready at the U-pick fields -- it's hot, dusty work, but what you don't eat on the spot, you put in your container and they ring it up and you go home with the best berries you've ever tasted!! Thank you so much my dear "Twin" for posting today and reminding me about the clementines! :D
