Reflections by Caroline AshtonI have to admit, I'm kind of a sucker for silly little surveys about color. I usually always read about color at home decorating and hardware store sites like Better Homes and Gardens, Lowes, and HGTV.com. And I also admit to subscribing to a ton of great decorating magazines where, you guessed it, the first article I usually read is the latest one having to do with color. Yes, I love design and the nuances of furniture placement, but to my simple way of thinking -- it's the color in the design that draws me into it sooner than the style or placement of the other design elements. If a room is in one of my unfavorite colors, I don't care if it's furnished in precious French antiques or the hottest new pieces just off the designer's drawing board, I still won't like it. So what is it about color? It's emotional. Pure and simple. It can tug at your heart or turn your stomach. If you live in it, work in it, wear it, or drive it, tugging at your heart is definitely better than the other response.
So I was a bit surprised when I took this quiz and the result was other than I had expected. My living room is dominated by the painting above and the room is furnished in the tones you see there -- all sunny, green, and airy. These colors go throughout the house. [But with other colors for contrast, too, and definitely lived in!] I drive a black car and on sunny days, I'll drive my old red convertible. My closet has every color in it, but I feel best in blues and greens, sometimes shades of red, sometimes all black. True, for the gym I have my old T-shirts in nearly every color you can imagine -- but even with them added in, I don't have too many items in "My" color! [Not a shoe, not a purse, not a plump couch pillow, not even a hat from my extensive hat collection. Nada.]
Here's what I got when I took the test:
Purple!!!??? I went through a purple phase many years ago. Some shades were great -- but too many of the lighter ones or the muted ones made me look positively anemic! I gave up purple. But I know it's popular again. Recently, it was even touted as "the New Black," but that's so common now a 64 count box of crayons could be called "the New Black" if a fashion maven declared it. In the last year or so I've seen chocolate, orange, and avocado also pushed as "the New Black" but where are they now? Relegated to the trash heap of color has-beens?
I am ambivalent about purple. I might be a purple, but I don't always feel like one. Deep down, I mean. No emotional pull there. I don't think I could live in a purple house, drive a purple car or wear all purple. But I know some people can and do and love it! On the other hand I love purple flowers, purple fruit, purple gemstones, a purple dawn or sunset. For ancient Emperors, it's a basic requirement. But me? I just don't know!

Interesting. I react very strongly to colour, especially shades I don't like. I once had a very mercurial greeny yellow shirt that made me feel physically sick when I wore it. I guess some people as more sensitive to colour vibrations. I did the test and I'm blue! I do have blue eyes and I like blues of all shades.
Hmmm. Interesting post and interesting quiz. I ended up with green, which I don't necessarily feel is correct, but then again, I couldn't necessarily pick a set of characteristics that fit me well to begin with.
I have this theory that the colors you dress in, tend to mirror (and/or affect) your moods. I hate wearing Black for that specific reason. OTOH, wearing too much color tends to make me have a crazy day.

Lizzie!! I so agree with what you said about shades that can make you sick! It's too bad we're wired to be so sensitive with a color that doesn't resonate -- but you're exactly right -- it becomes so physical you just feel ill. Joy!! Green!! I love it -- my other favorite everyday color! I know the quiz has some defects -- I found a word from one line and one from another that probably is more descriptive of my personality and outlook on life. I took the quiz 3 times over a period of several days and even with a slight change in some of the responses it came out the same -- always PURPLE. Then I chose VERY different responses, I came out Blue. But only Blue once out of the 4 times I took it over the last week or so.
You're absolutely right about wearing too many colors, too! Though I don't mind a crazy day once in a while -- it is a little too schizophrenic to have them very often or for very long! LOL

P!! I think you got the color you are -- a sunny personality! [I often see that in your writing, too!] So maybe this test is a little more accurate than just a fun sort of parlor game? I just don't know enough about it -- but you, too have blue for your favorite color and you also came out with something quite different. Very interesting!!
I think it would be useful for everyone to take the test in a month or so. Our thinking about it might skew the results, though. I just don't know! :(

I knew we were kindred spirits, I'm also purple.
I do like purple in certain shades but my favorite color is green, but once again it depends on the shade.
I like the idea of trying it again a month from now, it would be interesting to see if we change acording to mood.

Hmmm....I like the rich brighter purples - it is so royal. My favorite is GREENS - from bright kiwi to deep forest green. I love color. My LEAST favorite is blue.

When we were out today, I tried to notice anyone in purple and saw very little until we stopped by my sister's for a moment to pick up some stuff -- and she had been gardening and was wearing purple!!! I asked her about it and she said, "These are my colors!" She said she felt good and connected with her morning's work.
I think it's the spiritual aspect of the color, myself! I will enjoy taking this test again next month, too! Thanks a bunch for participating today!! :D

SG!!! Another Twin!! How wonderful!! You are either SQ's and my Twin or Flea's Twin [depending on the color!] which is very cool!! I think either color is you -- but I'm leaning a bit more toward the Purple blingy aspect -- but you can be a peaceful type, too, which is also good!!
I think you definitely should take the test again next month. Like it's been said, depending on the day, and even the time of day, we're likely to score a little differently each time we take it.
And really, color is so important in our lives, I think it's okay to like or be like more than one color. Or a blend -- oops that's what purple is [blue & red!] and white [all colors] -- oh, well, as Gilda Radner used to say on Saturday Night Live, "never mind!"

And the burning question I also have is what is the current "new black?"
I don't remember when the big color commission meets in Paris every year to choose the upcoming year's colors, but I am sure that site will carry the latest information.
Now, that would be so much fun to be a fly on the wall and listen to the discussion regarding the colors of the year. But I don't speak French. LOL It might have been just that one year it was held in Paris. At any rate, they suggest the new colors to the manufacturers of the world and that's why a particular shade kind of shows up all over at the same time. It's been quite noticeable with electric lime green and orange over the last few years.
