What is this?
October, though awesomely beautiful with the changing leaves and brilliant skies, is the spooky month, hands down, when the winds howl and the branches scrape the windows eerily. Traditionally we conjure up thoughts and visions of ghouls, zombies, vampires, and other monsters. Well, I don't scare easily. Those "creatures" are just either too funny or make me wonder how the technicians created them. There is no psychological kick to that kind of conventionally "scary" product.
I have to admit, what really gives me the creeps [aside from US politics, ghosts, Hannibal Lecter, and Al Qaeda, of course] are these unknown things like the halo formation that popped up over Moscow last week. The meteorologists will tell you -- it's a cloud formation or it's an Aurora Borealis or a halo cloud -- something easily explained by our current understanding of nature. That's the scientific explanation. No problem.
But -- what if?
What if this thing over Moscow held something far more sinister than crystallized water? What if there was a UFO embedded in that beautifully mysterious cloud? What if they were going to do something very bad? It's the unknown and it's very creepy! Here's a video:
I have to admit -- these kinds of stories scare the stuffin' out of me. They aren't funny in any way, they pose no immediate threat to anyone just observing -- but when your imagination runs wild, you can seriously scare yourself.
What are your thoughts? You don't have to believe in space aliens -- but what if...? Is this fun for Halloween or what? Better than old fashioned ghost stories? Or not much different?
What fright triggers that heart pounding "fight or flight" response in you this time of year? Ugly goblins and vicious witches and ghostly ghouls? Or maybe something "out of this world?"
Thanks for your comments and remember to sleep with the lights on tonight! LOL
Sweet dreams!

Wow. That's wild! I work with a programmer who lives in Moscow. I think I'll email him right now and get the local perspective...
I don't know that it scares me but it is pretty strange.
Anything that smacks of nuclear threat is not funny to me even if it's supposed to be a joke or whatever! I'll take the ordinary halloween staples for sure!
Kate!! That's very cool about knowing someone in Moscow. What did he say about the halo? Is it a topic of general conversation there, or are the locals taking it in stride and moving on to other subjects? Thanks for any additional info you can provide here! :D
SG!! I agree 100% -- it isn't funny in the least! It sure makes a Halloween ghoul or ghostie seem awfully comforting! Thanks for stopping by and adding your thoughts today! :)
Well, that is creepy! What scares me? Dolls.
Hi Sunflower!
Here's Paul's response - he lives in Moscow but he and I work together (online) all day long...
Hmmmm it was the election day and it was pretty rainy so in order to get people out of their houses to vote (and on any holidays) we usually have some reagents introduced into atmosphere to suppress raining for several hours. Probably this is what it looks like when airplane does it, not really sure though as I never saw it myself - searched local news for this, didn’t find anything.
So, there you have it. I was hoping for something more exciting. :)
Rosey!! Thanks for stopping by today and commenting!! It is creepy -- ! I am intrigued about what scares you -- dolls!! That is understandable. I have seen some ugly ones in my day that I just couldn't imagine some little child holding and loving.
But I would like to know how you developed your fear. And if it is more common than most people know. For Halloween are you going to dress up as a doll? That might be a lot of fun to work through your fears! [I'd have to go dressed as a slug, but I'm saving that story for a future blog! LOL] Thanks again for visiting!
Kate!! Thanks for the report from your friend on scene!! I thought the incident happened on October 10 but I found out it was on October 6, during a big football match between the Netherlands and Russia. I am wondering if those details might mine up more local information? It is very interesting about the rain suppression -- that certainly seems like a logical explanation. The little research I could understand on halo clouds indicated they were examples of crystallized water vapors and any source of light would make them glow. I think we were having a good fullish moon during that week, which could have been the source of the glow.
You're right, it's not as interesting as the other possibilities but it would be nice to get to the bottom of it, since the video is so intriguing! Thanks for the update! :D
